The Trump Greenland push just got a congressional wingman.
According to a Fox News report, House Republicans are moving to set Greenland on a fast track toward the United States, framing it as a strategic play and a message that Capitol Hill has the president’s back.
Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) says he’s introducing a bill Monday that would authorize President Donald Trump “to take such steps as may be necessary” to acquire Greenland and begin the process of bringing the Danish territory under U.S. rule.
“I think it is in the world’s interest for the United States to exert sovereignty over Greenland,” Fine told Fox News Digital. “Congress would still have to choose to make it a state,” he added, “but this would simply authorize the president to do what he’s doing and say the Congress stands behind him. And then it would expedite it into becoming a state, but it would still be up to Congress about whether to do that.”
The timing isn’t accidental.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday he’ll be meeting with Danish officials this week to discuss Greenland — adding fuel to a story that’s no longer just a Trump riff.
Trump has been publicly pushing the idea of the U.S. buying the Arctic island since his first term.
Republicans have pointed to Greenland’s strategic importance — its proximity to Russia, and the critical minerals inside its borders. Fine agrees with that case, and makes a second argument: he says the people of Greenland would be better off under U.S. rule.
“Their poverty rate is high. Denmark hasn’t treated them well,” Fine said. “When war came to town, Denmark couldn’t protect them. Guess who protected Greenland during World War II? We did.”
But even inside the GOP, there’s nervousness about how far this could go.
Some lawmakers were rattled after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt declined to rule out using military force to acquire the island during a recent press conference.
It started as a headline-grabber.
Now Republicans are trying to turn it into a map change.
