Michigan Bills Would Restore Parental Rights on Abortion

Last week, a series of bills (HB 5201, 5202, and 5203) were introduced in the Michigan legislature that would restore abortion reporting requirements in our state. Right to Life of Michigan applauds these bills and the pro-life legislators who introduced them, with President Amber Roseboom making the following statement:

The restoration of abortion complication reporting in Michigan is an essential step forward in ensuring women do not go into abortion blind. Women have a right to know accurate information about the procedure they are considering undergoing or medicine they are considering taking. This begins with data that demonstrates associated safety or risk.

With abortion, the patient is always a woman. Women in our state are being singled out and denied the basic right to facts on abortion complications despite the rising risks.

A woman in Michigan can have an abortion for any reason throughout her pregnancy. Beyond this reality, safety measures meant to minimize risks to the woman have all been removed. Abortion clinic health and safety regulations were removed. Informed consent for the woman is blocked by the courts.

Data from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services demonstrates that serious complications from abortion rose 38% in one year. The very report that showed us this alarming reality was subsequently terminated. These bills (HB 5201, 5202, and 5203) are an effort to reinstitute that commonsense report.

Thank you to State Representatives Brad Paquette (R-37), Jennifer Wortz (R-43), and Rachelle Smit (R-35) for your leadership on behalf of women in our state.
