MLK: He Was So Much Better than We Are

Prof. Pakaluk writes: “I’ve never to be honest been a fan of MLK day. His sexual ethics make him someone you don’t want to hold up as a model, to anyone. . . . But John Ellis this morning posted an excerpt from the speech that MLK gave to striking sanitation workers in Memphis the day before he was assassinated, which makes me reconsider. The reason is that, although abstractly and for the reasons stated, there should be no MLK holiday, he was so much better than we are – we have collectively and as a people dropped so low – that we can only become better by studying what he had to say, if (a big ‘if) we do that.”
