Today, the Nebraska Legislature failed to advance LB 669 by two votes after pro-choice senators filibustered the bill and blocked common-sense protections for women facing trafficking and forced abortions.
LB 669, introduced by Senator Tanya Storer and prioritized by Senator Dan Lonowski, sought to strengthen Nebraska’s informed consent laws by requiring abortion providers to screen for coercion, domestic violence, and human trafficking before performing an abortion. The legislation also ensured women were informed of available resources, provided access to national hotlines, and given an opportunity to make a confidential phone call, if they choose.

“The Legislature had a clear choice: stand with women who are being exploited and abused, or side with an abortion lobby spreading misinformation and profiting at the expense of women in danger,” said Nate Grasz, Executive Director of Nebraska Family Alliance. “Sex trafficking and abortion are inextricably linked, and LB 669 would have given pregnant women a critical layer of protection.”
Despite the bill’s narrow focus on safety and accountability, not a single Democrat voted in support of this anti-trafficking measure, and several senators refused to even cast a vote.
“Opposing LB 669 meant rejecting a simple screening to prevent human trafficking and forced abortions. It denied vulnerable women access to information that could help them escape dangerous situations. As sex trafficking and domestic violence persist as real problems in our state, today, pro-choice senators chose politics over people, voting against the most basic safeguards to identify and help victims. Women in Nebraska deserve better.”
Nebraska Family Alliance will continue advocating for policies that protect women, children, and families and hold lawmakers accountable when ideology and special interest groups are prioritized over human dignity and the people they represent.
