According to a Media Research Center report, broadcast network coverage of the murder of 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago student Sheridan Gorman is drawing scrutiny after major outlets were slow to report key details about the suspect, including his immigration status and hospitalization.
As of Tuesday morning, total coverage across ABC, CBS, and NBC clocked in at just three minutes and 43 seconds, according to compiled tallies — with CBS accounting for the bulk of recent reporting.

On Tuesday’s CBS Mornings, co-host Gayle King introduced the latest developments, noting the suspect “entered the country illegally” and missed a court appearance while being treated for tuberculosis.
The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Venezuelan national Jose Medina, has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Gorman, who was killed while walking with friends near campus.
Authorities say Medina entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 and had a prior arrest before the fatal shooting.
He is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment for tuberculosis, which delayed his initial court appearance.
Despite the severity of the case, major network coverage has been limited and uneven.
CBS has aired roughly two minutes of reporting across its broadcasts. ABC has logged just over a minute, largely from a single segment. NBC’s total coverage remains under 30 seconds.
Earlier reports from CBS and NBC only briefly mentioned the case, with anchors noting the suspect’s background and prior warrant but offering minimal additional detail.
The killing itself has shocked the Chicago community and drawn national attention.
Gorman, an 18-year-old freshman, was shot while walking with friends near Loyola’s campus in what authorities described as a sudden, violent attack.
Police say the suspect emerged from behind a structure on a pier before opening fire, striking Gorman as the group attempted to flee.
President Donald Trump cited the killing as justification for tougher deportation policies.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family has placed blame on systemic failures, saying policies allowed the suspect to remain in a position to commit the crime.
