Gov. Gavin Newsom told a crowd in Texas on Saturday that Democrats reclaiming the House in 2026 is “the whole thing.”
Newsom, 58, took a victory lap after California’s Proposition 50 — a sweeping measure to redraw the state’s congressional map in Democrats’ favor — passed in a landslide just four days earlier.
Speaking in Houston, he couldn’t resist a jab at his political foil, President Donald Trump.
“He is an historic president, however historically unpopular,” Newsom quipped. “And he had a very bad night on Tuesday.”
That night, Democrats celebrated a string of wins — gubernatorial victories in New Jersey and Virginia, and a New York City mayoral triumph by democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani over former governor Andrew Cuomo, now an independent.
Prop 50 was widely seen as a retaliatory strike against Texas Republicans, who redrew their state’s map over the summer to strengthen GOP seats.
On Tuesday night, Newsom called on blue states to follow California’s lead.
“We can de facto end Donald Trump’s presidency as we know it the minute Speaker Jeffries gets sworn in,” he said. “It is all on the line.”
By Saturday, his tone was triumphant but urgent.
“There were lines around the block two hours after polling had stopped because people wanted to be heard, not just seen,” Newsom told the crowd. “They wanted to send a message. But we cannot rest until we take it back.”
“And, so, that starts today,” he continued. “It started on Tuesday.
“We can shape the future here in Texas. We can shape the future all across the South and across the United States of America. You have that power.”
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), in her impossibly elastic jeans, introduced Gavin Newsom in Houston on Saturday.

Fox News contributor Joe Concha shared a clip of the California governor, saying, “I think Newsom understands where the energy of the party is.”
Concha also blasted Newsom for being a “shapeshifter.”
I think Newsom understands where the energy of the party is… and that is the far left resistance wing. he’s a shapeshifter and will play to that (gullible) crowd to get the nomination—- then act like a centrist in the general. This nomination is his to lose. https://t.co/4iSBqbYP9O
