Republican Introduces Bill to Make Sure Fathers Pay 50% of Pregnancy Costs

A Republican lawmaker introduced legislation Tuesday that would require biological fathers to pay at least 50% of a pregnant woman’s out-of-pocket medical expenses.

It’s a move to respond to the epidemic of absent fathers that pro-life advocates could see as a step to promote paternal responsibility and support mothers who choose life. Some moms have abortions because of financial reasons and a lack of support from the father and the bill could help save babies from abortions.

Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, unveiled the Supporting Healthy Pregnancy Act, which would require states to establish systems ensuring that an unmarried father contributes at least half of pregnancy-related costs, including health insurance premiums and expenses associated with delivery.

The bill excludes costs for abortion and includes limitations on the costs incurred, with the expecting mother required to seek payments before the father is legally obligated.

Hinson said the measure aligns with efforts to support families.

“I’m a mom on a mission to make life easier for my fellow moms and families,” Hinson said in a statement. “That’s why I’m working to expand access to maternal care, ensure women have resources throughout pregnancy and beyond, and improve child care options for growing families.”

She added, “Strong families make a strong nation, and we should work together to support the parents and women who are building America’s future.”

“As a mom of two, I’m proud to be a leader in that fight for Iowa and for families nationwide,” Hinson said.

The legislation is part of broader Republican initiatives to bolster family support, coming amid criticisms that the party focuses on restricting abortion without aiding post-birth needs.

Currently, in most states, single mothers can only seek child support from birth onward, leaving pregnancy expenses uncovered.
