In November, the American Journal of Public Health published a study analyzing the impact of the Texas Heartbeat Act. Analyzing both in-state and out-of-state abortion data, this study found that the Heartbeat Act reduced the number of abortions that were performed on Texas women by over 18 percent.
This study was covered by a number of media outlets in the Lone Star State including the Houston Chronicle, Houston Public Media, San Antonio Express-News, and Red River Radio.
The authors obtained abortion data from Texas and six surrounding states. Data from September 2021 to May 2022 when the Heartbeat Act was in effect was compared to data from September 2020 to May 2021 when the Heartbeat Act was not in effect. Unlike some previous studies, the authors were able to analyze how the Heartbeat Act impacted different age demographics. While abortion numbers fell among all age demographics, the results indicate the incidence of abortion fell the most among Texans younger than 18 years of age.

Overall, this study adds to a growing body of research that shows that the Texas Heartbeat Act has saved lives. Three separate analyses of Texas birth data in the months following the enactment of the Heartbeat Act all found that the Texas Heartbeat Act has saved over 1,000 lives every month. Overall, plenty of data analyzing both births and abortions have shown that recently enacted pro-life laws have prevented abortions and saved lives. As always pro-lifers would do well to stay the course.
