Texans Fire Dan Crenshaw – The New American

Texans just fired Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw, who lost his primary race on Tuesday to state Representative Steve Toth.

Texas voters had elected Crenshaw four times before overwhelmingly deciding to oust him. He lost by double digits, garnering 40 percent of the votes; Toth took nearly 59 percent.

Crenshaw’s Record

Crenshaw was painted as insufficiently conservative. Even Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) a fellow neocon, worked to get rid of him. In addition to endorsements from Cruz, Toth also gathered support from the House Freedom Caucus, Turning Point USA, Texas Right to Life, 21 Republican colleagues from the Texas state Legislature, and a number of influential local conservatives, according to reports. Crenshaw, on the other hand, was endorsed by Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), the National Border Patrol Council, and the National Rifle Association. One notable missing endorsement was President Donald Trump,

Toth compared Crenshaw to a “version of Liz Cheney.” And he wasn’t wrong. Crenshaw’s voting record is not very “conservative.” According to The New American’s Freedom Index, his lifetime Freedom Score is a dismal 58 percent. That percentage refers to how often his votes aligned with the U.S. Constitution.

Crenshaw’s lack of constitutional understanding was recently reflected in his statements on Trump’s congressionally unapproved war against Iran. “There’s a debate over the legality of the actions against Iran but the law is clear,” he wrote on his X account. “While it appears intense, this is in fact a limited action, not an occupation, and not an open-ended war. The law is clear, and the President is operating within it.”

Will Toth Be Better?

Toth appears equally supportive of Trump’s unilateral approach to launching the war.

His record in the state Legislature promises a little more constitutional fidelity than Crenshaw’s, but indicates some concerns as well. He has notched an 87-percent lifetime score, but did very poorly during the 2025-2026 sessions, managing to vote along constitutional principles only 67 percent of the time. He voted in favor of an Article V Convention, indicating that he doesn’t understand the risks of a convention or the true reason the government is out of control.

Toth will take on Democratic nominee Shaun Finnie.
