Deep in our souls we grieve over the senseless and horrific tragedy that took place this week at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. Two young schoolchildren were killed and 15 others were wounded by an individual who was clearly in need of major spiritual and psychiatric help. We add our prayers for the many victims and their families who are suffering such uncomprehensible loss.
We are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals whose bravery, compassion, and unwavering dedication brought comfort and care to the injured children and to the entire affected community.
One story that particularly resonates for me is the remarkable story of the young boy. He recounted how his friend used his own body to shield him when the bullets started flying. This young boy literally had his friend’s back, quickly throwing himself over his friend’s body as he was shot in the back.
We pray this young boy will fully recover as we marvel over his selfless act of bravery to protect his friend. It makes us wonder how many of us would exhibit the same act of courage. Through his actions and love for his friend, this little boy acted on and embodied the core teachings of his faith.

These tragedies strike deep at the heart and soul of who we are because they involve young children. Children, born and unborn, represent everything we value.
Children’s lives matter because they represent the future and hope of humanity.
Children’s lives matter because from the moment of conception, every child is endowed with unique gifts and infinite potential.
Children’s lives matter because each one deserves to be protected and cared for.
In dark times like these, children have the ability to bring out the best in humanity. A perfect example is the outpouring of nurturing and human emotion demonstrated by the doctors who are treating the injured children and providing daily updates on their condition.
It is profoundly sad that it takes a terrible tragedy of this magnitude to show the better angels of our nature. Yet the countless acts of kindness and compassion and the bravery and selflessness of one young boy, who was willing to lay his life down for a friend, stands out and provides us with a glimmer of hope for a better, more compassionate future.
While such moments may not erase the pain, they help restore our faith in humanity, even if only for a little while, reminding us of the love, courage, and selflessness that still exist in our world in defense of children, born and unborn
