The Voice Of God

A lot of people hear from God in a lot of ways – some positive, some negative, and some just think they do.  Signs, portents, hints, messages – it can be very hard to tell when God is telling us something and when we are projecting our desires onto Him.  Experience has taught me that we are highly unlikely to know God is speaking to us in the moment; that it is only with the perspective of time – and result – that we can know for sure.

So, when I saw this article about the Sea of Galilee turning red, I did not think of the Biblical plagues, which happened quite a bit south of the Galilee region.  Somehow in this technological age, I think God is going to find new ways to get His point across and to provide His bona fides.

It is good to know that our current administration is listening for God, as opposed to the prior one that seems to have missed the message.

Speaking of missing the message, this abysmal piece about insurers thinking the world can no longer be insured because – climate change.  They forget that God has actually got our back.  Actually, they don’t think about God at all – which is odd given that their job is to help with the financial difficulties that arise when He acts.

I will never confuse God with the current president, but if I were a union worker for the E.P.A. – I’d be talking to God – a lot.  Haven’t I always said that when it comes to environmental policy, follow the money?  You know how some unions have tried to keep businesses (old steel – automotive…) operating well past their sell-by date?  Yeah.

Which brings us to California, where I think God is speaking in all sorts of unusual ways.  I think oil companies just might be passing on a message from the Almighty to the formerly golden state.  But when it comes to crime, not sure they are listening.  You would think that last January’s fires might have been loud enough to be heard, but, as other major fires have erupted now that it actually is fire season, it is clear they see the fires not as a warning from above, but as an opportunity for further mischief.  When even AI is telling a state it has a problem, I would think some meditative, listening prayer were in order.  But when you think you are God, who has time to listen to actual God?

As Christians, we tend to rely on God bring all this chaos and noise to “work together for good.”  But that is a conditional promise, “to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”  I would think that means listening to Him, and there are times when I wonder if as a nation, even as a church, we are?
