President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Pfizer has agreed to sell its prescription drugs in the United States at “Most Favored Nation” pricing, just one day after his administration required pharmaceutical companies to respond to a sweeping executive order on drug costs.
Drugmakers were given until Sept. 29 to comply with Trump’s directive, which mandates that companies sell medicines in the U.S. at the lowest price offered in other developed nations, establish direct-to-consumer purchase options, and stop undercutting U.S. patients by offering cheaper rates abroad.
“Pfizer is committing to offer all of their prescription medications to Medicaid. It will be at the most favored nation’s prices. It’s going to have a huge impact on bringing Medicaid costs down like nothing else,” Trump told reporters during a press briefing in the Oval Office.
The president noted that Pfizer will also sell some of its most popular medications directly to all consumers at steeply discounted prices, available through a federal government website.
Trump had sent requests to 16 additional drugmakers under the order, but it remains unclear whether they will follow Pfizer’s lead.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared the announcement on X, saying, “This is a consequential moment for our country. Drug prices WILL be lower for everyday Americans, thanks to the negotiating prowess and determination of President Donald J. Trump. Democrats have been wanting to do this for decades. The Trump Administration has delivered.”
