A last-minute breakthrough pulled the region back from the brink.
President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the United States and Iran have agreed to a two-week ceasefire — anchored by Tehran reopening the Strait of Hormuz — in a dramatic pivot just minutes before his 8 p.m. deadline.
The deal pauses what had been looming U.S. strikes on Iran’s infrastructure and marks the first major de-escalation in nearly 40 days of conflict that rattled global shipping and energy markets.

Trump said the ceasefire is “subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz.”
“This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” Trump said.
The agreement came after direct outreach from Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, who urged Trump to hold off on what he described as a “destructive force” poised to strike Iran.
Pakistan has played a key role as a mediator, relaying proposals between Washington and Tehran during the conflict.
Trump said the U.S. received a 10-point proposal from Iran and believes it provides a workable framework for a broader agreement.
“We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate,” he said.
He added that “almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to,” signaling confidence that a longer-term deal could follow.
“A two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated,” Trump said.
On the ground, Iran confirmed it will allow passage through the Strait of Hormuz for the duration of the ceasefire, though under its own military management.
That condition was central to the deal.
Iran’s foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said Tehran would reopen the waterway for the next two weeks, effectively easing the choke point that had disrupted global trade flows.
Israel has also agreed to the two-week ceasefire, according to a White House official, broadening the scope of the pause beyond just U.S.-Iran dynamics.
