President Donald Trump brushed aside mounting political criticism over the war with Iran and predicted the collapse of the Cuban government during a wide-ranging phone interview with Politico on Thursday.
Speaking in a call, Trump dismissed concerns about the political and economic fallout from the escalating Iran conflict, insisting the military campaign remains popular with voters.
“People are loving what’s happening,” Trump said, brushing off worries about the war’s impact on gas prices and U.S. ammunition supplies.
The president said the military campaign against Tehran could trigger broader geopolitical consequences beyond Iran. “Cuba’s going to fall, too,” Trump predicted.
Trump suggested that U.S. economic pressure — particularly the disruption of Venezuelan oil shipments that had long sustained Havana — was accelerating instability on the island.
“Well, it’s because of my intervention, intervention that is happening,” Trump said. “Obviously, otherwise they wouldn’t have this problem. We cut off all oil, all money … everything coming in from Venezuela, which was the sole source.”
“How long have you been hearing about Cuba — Cuba, Cuba — for 50 years?” he added. “And that’s one of the small ones for me.”
Trump also confirmed that U.S. officials have been in contact with Cuba’s communist leadership as the situation there grows more volatile.
“They need help. We are talking to Cuba,” he said.
The president’s remarks come as economic turmoil and energy shortages deepen in Cuba following the disruption of oil shipments from Venezuela, which had long served as the island’s primary fuel supply.
Trump made similar comments about Cuba while speaking to the press outside the White House.
