Trump Declares Ceasefire in Iran : The Other McCain

Posted on | April 8, 2026 | No Comments

During Tuesday’s liberal freakout, Democrats were denouncing President Trump as a genocidal maniac because of his threats to destroy Iran. Then, about an hour before the 8 p.m. deadline he’d given the Iranian regime, Trump announced that a deal had been reached for a ceasefire:

President Donald Trump and the Islamic Republic of Iran both announced on Tuesday evening just before the U.S. president’s deadline for a deal that they have agreed to a two-week ceasefire while negotiators finalize a deal between the warring nations.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform to announce that he has agreed to the ceasefire urged by the Pakistani Prime Minister . . .
Israel has also agreed to the ceasefire, per CNN, which quoted a White House official. “Israel is part of the two-week ceasefire President Donald Trump announced just an hour and a half before his deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face escalated military attacks on civilian infrastructure, a senior White House official tells CNN,” CNN reported. “Israel has agreed to also suspend its bombing campaign while negotiations continue, the official said.”

More background from Beege Wellborn at Hot Air:

I have a feeling there were several things moving the Iranians along in this direction if they wanted to have any hope of saving their miserable, murderous skins. The US and Israelis started smacking industrial installations this evening, for one thing. . . .
B-52s were also noted leaving RAF Fairford within the flight window to arrive over Iran at Trump’s ultimatum zero hour. . . .
Jesse Watters reporting that China begged Iran to take the deal because it [i.e., the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz] was cratering their already shaky economy.

Hat-tip: Instapundit, who adds: “Word is that one of the targets struck today was a collection of airplanes the mullahs had set up for fleeing the country. That may have had something to do with this.” We now have two weeks of a conditional ceasefire, while negotiations continue for a permanent peace agreement. What will happen during that two weeks?

Recall that Trump had already begun sending combat troops toward the region (“Guess What Time It Is, ‘Iranian Leaders’?”), including a Marine battalion and elements of the Army’s 82nd Airborne and 10th Mountain divisions. We can assume that those troops will continue to deploy, while we wait to see whether the Tehran regime is serious about ending the war. If Iran doesn’t negotiate in good faith, then we can go back to fighting, having used the two-week pause to resupply the Navy and Air Force with bombs, etc., and with ground troops ready to go.
