President Trump wants to turn tariffs into cash for Americans — literally.
The president on Sunday said he wants to give most Americans a $2,000 “dividend” payment funded directly from tariff revenue, a move he framed as proof that his signature trade policies are paying off.
“A dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high-income people!) will be paid to everyone,” Trump wrote on TRUTH Social, touting his tariff program as a financial windfall for U.S. households.
He offered no details on when or how the rebates would be distributed, but said the funds would come from “the billions” collected since his tariffs took effect.
Trump said the policy has “driven record investment in American manufacturing” and claimed it’s time for everyday citizens to share in the spoils.
The idea of tariff rebates isn’t new for Trump. Back in July, he hinted his administration was weighing a smaller rebate tied to tariff revenues — essentially turning global trade penalties into a patriotic payday.
The announcement comes as a key part of Trump’s trade agenda faces scrutiny at the U.S. Supreme Court, where justices last week grilled lawyers over his use of the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act to levy sweeping import duties.
Trump followed up on the tariff dividend plan with a Monday morning TRUTH post: “All money left over from the $2000 payments made to low and middle income USA Citizens, from the massive Tariff Income pouring into our Country from foreign countries, which will be substantial, will be used to SUBSTANTIALLY PAY DOWN NATIONAL DEBT. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
