Two National Guard Troops Shot Near White House in Ambush

Two National Guard troops were shot in what police describe as an “ambush-style attack” just blocks from the White House on Wednesday. Authorities say the suspect is now in custody.

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey initially posted on X that both service members had died from their injuries, but later walked it back, saying reports were “conflicting.” Officials confirmed at a 4:45 p.m. briefing that both Guard members were alive but in critical condition after being transported to a nearby hospital.

The shooting unfolded near the Farragut West Metro station in Northwest D.C., less than half a mile from the White House. The two soldiers were armed and reportedly returned fire. Photos from the scene show that at least one was struck in the head.

Investigators are still working to determine the gunman’s motive.

The area surrounding the station remains an active crime scene.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced that he will deploy an additional 500 National Guard members to the D.C. area.

President Trump called the shooter an “animal” and said he will pay “a very steep price,” in a TRUTH Social post.

The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price. God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!
