After more than 200 women whose children were saved following Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) treatment voiced gratitude for the assistance they received from the Abortion Pill Rescue Network (APRN) – and disagreement with government officials suing to quash speech about APR – markedly more people have joined in to back APR.
More than 200 APR moms signed an open letter conveying public gratitude for the care, information, and hope they received from the APRN just as the first lawsuit over APR to reach trial in the U.S. began in late June. Since that time public show of support for reversal has broadened beyond APR moms and increased tenfold
Heartbeat International and RealOptions Obria Medical Clinics, represented by legal non-profit Thomas More Society, are on trial in California defending the right to share information about APR. The case has implications for free speech extending beyond California.
Attorney General Rob Bonta sued in September 2023 to block both organizations from “advertising Abortion Pill Reversal as safe and effective.” Heartbeat manages the Abortion Pill Rescue Network (APRN), a network of nearly 1,500 healthcare professionals, pregnancy centers and hospitals that administer the APR protocol.
Heartbeat is the largest network of pregnancy help organizations in the U.S. and globally, and RealOptions has four licensed medical clinics the San Francisco Bay Area that provide comprehensive medical services to both men and women, along with holistic health services, health and healthy relationship education, life-affirming outreach to students, and wide-ranging reproductive loss support.
Bonta accuses the two organizations of false advertising, dismisses APR as medical misinformation. and is seeking nearly $20 million in penalties.
Heartbeat and RealOptions argue that the state’s case is an unprecedented use of consumer protection law to restrict the free flow of medical information and that no woman should be forced to complete an abortion that she no longer wants.
The State of California has conceded that it has received no complaints from California women regarding APR.
At press time the total number of moms served by the APRN signing on stood at 226 with 50-plus from California.
Since the 200-plus women signed the open letter, more than 40 who were from California, Heartbeat made a broader open letter of support of the Abortion Pill Rescue Network available and is receiving remarkable response.
Now 350 healthcare providers have signed on to the broader letter, with 45-plus from California.
Additionally, 1,478 people from the general public, including more than 225 from California, have signed the open letter.
The wider letter reads in part:
Every woman deserves access to accurate information about her pregnancy and the freedom to make informed decisions about her health. This includes women who, after beginning a chemical abortion, experience regret and seek information about whether there is a possibility of continuing their pregnancies.
Regardless of one’s views on abortion, women facing life-altering decisions should never be denied information simply because others disagree with it. Nor should they be criticized, dismissed, or silenced for seeking help.
The letter notes that women contact the APRN voluntarily, and that current efforts to cast sharing information about APR as misconduct are “deeply concerning.”
“In a free society, women should be able to seek second opinions, ask questions, explore alternatives, and make decisions in consultation with healthcare professionals,” the letter states. “Restricting access to information does not empower women. It limits their choices.”
Of the 200-plus women who signed the open letter voicing thankfulness for the care, information, and hope they received from the APRN, over 90 of these mothers shared photos of their children, underscoring both the moms’ appreciation and the impact of APR. Those photos can be viewed HERE.
“We stand together to affirm that women deserve to know all of their options,” the moms’ letter says. “We are grateful for the care we received, and we support the continued availability of Abortion Pill Rescue Network services for women who may one day find themselves in the same position.”
To date, statistics show that more than 8000 lives have been saved thanks to the APRN.
Testimony in the California trial over APR was set to conclude at the end of July.
