27% of Democrats Support Federal Investigation Into Gavin Newsom

California Gov. Gavin Newsom may have his party’s biggest names defending him, but a sizable share of Democratic voters aren’t convinced.

A new Daily Mail/JL Partners survey found that 27% of Democrats support the federal investigation into Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. That includes 13% who strongly support the probe and 14% who somewhat support it.

Newsom revealed last month that he and California’s first lady are under investigation by the Department of Justice, an inquiry involving both the FBI and IRS. According to reports, investigators are examining Siebel Newsom’s finances and the couple’s tax records.

The governor has dismissed the investigation as a politically motivated attack orchestrated by President Donald Trump.

But the poll suggests that argument isn’t resonating with everyone — including some Democrats.

Among independent voters, 43% said they support the investigation, while 36% opposed it. Republicans were even more supportive, with more than 70% backing the federal probe.

The survey questioned 1,059 registered voters nationwide.

When news of the investigation first broke, prominent Democrats quickly rallied behind Newsom. Sen. Adam Schiff and former Vice President Kamala Harris both accused the Trump administration of weaponizing federal law enforcement against a political opponent.

The investigation is reportedly separate from another federal corruption case involving Dana Williamson, a longtime Newsom ally and former chief of staff in the governor’s political orbit. Williamson pleaded guilty to federal fraud and tax charges earlier this year.
