A 17-year-old Arizona teenager who was eight months pregnant was shot and killed by her boyfriend outside a San Diego vacation rental during a family trip, authorities said.
Her baby girl was delivered by emergency cesarean section and left in critical condition, fighting for her own life in the hospital.
Jariah Edwards of Buckeye, Arizona, was shot just after 1 a.m. on May 30 outside the Bay Park rental home where her family was staying. She died at the hospital after doctors delivered the baby at 32 weeks gestation. The baby survived the shooting that killed her mother and remains hospitalized.

Edwards’ 21-year-old boyfriend, Trevon Williams of Tolleson, Arizona, traveled separately to San Diego and shot her outside the rental, police said.
He fled the scene and was arrested about two hours later in a nearby canyon. Officers recovered a semi-automatic handgun.
Williams was booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, discharging a firearm, and possession and transportation of a machine gun. He is being held without bond and was scheduled to be arraigned June 3.
Family members said the trip to California was intended to give Edwards a break from Williams, who had grown abusive. Her mother, Tanisha Moore, took Edwards and her sister on the getaway “because this young man was not acting himself,” cousin Darlene Hill told The Arizona Republic.
Edwards was Williams’ first girlfriend; they met when he introduced himself while she was walking in the neighborhood.
Edwards’ sister, Jaidyn Edwards, posted on Facebook: “Why riah whyy, this overly hurts. Know our love is unconditional. we’re gonna take good care of your baby girl. I wont disappoint you when it comes to her. you didnt deserve nun of this and he didnt deserve you, you had the purest heart & soul.”
Friends remembered Edwards as kind, funny and excited to become a mother.
Amara Corley told KNXV: “She was my best friend, but we were all very close to her.”
She added: “She was just ready to finally meet her and see what she looks like.”
“She was so excited. I feel like it gave her something to look forward to. Just all the stress and stuff, especially with that relationship.”
Jamila Corley said: “She just had a natural nurturing energy to her.” She added of Williams: “He was literally a monster and he ran into somebody with a pure soul. There’s nothing she could have done that made him act like this.”
“We didn’t get enough time with her. Like no justice, no amount of years will make up for him taking her life away.”
“That’s the last part we have of her, while he still gets to be alive in jail.”Samaya Corley said Williams “literally drained the happiness from her.”
A GoFundMe has been set up to support Edwards’ newborn daughter and cover funeral expenses. It had raised more than $10,000 as of June 2.
San Diego police Sgt. Christopher Leahy said the baby’s condition would be released in the coming days. Edwards’ family described her as quiet and shy but coming out of her shell. Friends said Edwards “did not deserve this at all.”
