Marco Rubio sparks viral reaction after wearing Nike tracksuit aboard Air Force One during China trip

Secretary of State Marco Rubio traded diplomacy-core for streetwear chic Tuesday — and the internet absolutely lost it.

Photos shared online by White House communications director Steven Cheung showed Rubio aboard Air Force One wearing a gray Nike Tech fleece tracksuit instead of his usual tailored suit-and-tie look.

The images instantly exploded across social media as Rubio traveled alongside Donald Trump on a high-stakes diplomatic trip to China focused on trade, security, and rising geopolitical tensions.

But online, the conversation quickly shifted from foreign policy to fashion policy.

Users immediately compared Rubio’s outfit to the now-infamous “Nike Tech Venezuela” meme tied to Nicolás Maduro, whose gray tracksuit became a viral image earlier this year after photos circulated following his U.S.-orchestrated capture.

“Is Marco going to be the DJ for the flight?” one user joked alongside an edited image showing Rubio behind a DJ booth.

Another meme simply labeled the secretary of state: “Nicolás Maduro as Marco Rubio.”

Others dubbed the look “the Maduro fit,” while another user cracked: “Okay — did I miss one of Marco Rubio’s new jobs? Sportswear model?”

The White House appeared more than happy to lean into the joke.

Cheung captioned one post: “Secretary Rubio rocking the Nike Tech ‘Venezuela’ on Air Force One!” while White House-linked accounts later described the moment as “full circle.”

The internet quickly coined a new term for the spectacle: “Maduromaxxing.”

Rubio’s casual look also revived another recent viral moment involving the secretary of state. Earlier this month, videos circulated online showing Rubio DJing at a family wedding while wearing headphones behind a mixing booth — clips that already turned the typically buttoned-up diplomat into an unlikely meme machine.
