Judge Rules Against Planned Parenthood Claim Abortion Pills are “Safer Than Tylenol”

In a significant victory for truth and the protection of women, First Circuit Court Judge J. Scott Duncan has ruled against Planned Parenthood’s attempt to dismiss a major false advertising lawsuit filed by Attorney General James Uthmeier.

The ruling highlights what Florida Right to Life and pro-life advocates have long warned: Planned Parenthood prioritizes profits over women’s health by downplaying the very real risks of abortion pills.

The lawsuit, filed in November 2025, accuses Planned Parenthood of violating Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act by falsely claiming that chemical abortion drugs are “safer than Tylenol” and other common medications. Uthmeier is seeking up to $350 million in penalties.

“The lawsuit centers on a statement on Planned Parenthood’s website claiming abortion pills are “safer than many other medicines like penicillin, Tylenol, and Viagra,” according to Leif Le Mahieu.

“Tylenol is an over-the-counter pain medicine that everyone understands, intuitively and by experience, to be safe,” the lawsuit said. “Chemical abortion, by contrast, uses mifepristone and misoprostol and is far more dangerous. Use of chemical abortion drugs routinely lands women in the emergency room with hemorrhaging and other serious complications.”

On May 27, Judge Duncan rejected the abortion giant’s motion to dismiss, allowing the case to proceed.

The Deceptive Claims Exposed

Planned Parenthood has repeatedly marketed mifepristone, combined with misoprostol, as “safer” than everyday pain relievers such as  Tylenol. These claims are not only misleading but also dangerously false. The lawsuit points out that abortion drugs, designed to end the life of an unborn child carry far greater risks than over-the-counter medications.

Judge Duncan noted that Planned Parenthood didn’t just call the drugs “safe;” they claimed they were “safer” than alternatives, which the evidence does not support.

Alarming Data on Abortion Pill Dangers

Recent data paints a troubling picture of the harm these drugs cause. In 2025, The Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) conducted a major study, analyzing insurance claims from over 865,000 women who took mifepristone between 2017 and 2023. It found that nearly 11% (10.93%) experienced serious adverse events within 45 days.

These complications included:

  • Hemorrhaging (3.31%)
  • Serious infections (1.34%)
  • Sepsis (0.1%)
  • Emergency room visits (nearly 5%)
  • Need for follow-up surgery (2.84%)

This rate is dramatically higher than the under 0.5% figure often cited in older, limited clinical trials by abortion advocates. Women are suffering hemorrhages, infections, and other life-threatening issues at rates that should alarm every mother, daughter, and healthcare provider. These are not anomalies — they represent real women facing trauma after trusting deceptive marketing.

Mail-Order Abortion Pills: A Recipe for Disaster

Making matters far worse, these potent drugs are now routinely mailed to women without any in-person medical visit. This bypasses critical safeguards. Without an ultrasound or physical exam, conditions such as ectopic pregnancies can go undetected.  For example, abortion pills do not treat ectopic pregnancies  — they can mask symptoms, leading to rupture of the fallopian tube, severe internal bleeding, and even death if not addressed promptly.

Women with undiagnosed health issues, incomplete medical histories, or contraindications are left to manage powerful drugs at home, often alone. This “Telehealth” model prioritizes convenience and volume over safety, often traumatizing women who were sold the “safer than Tylenol” lie!

Hope Through Abortion Pill Reversal

But there is good news for women who take the first pill (mifepristone) and then regret their decision. Abortion pill reversal (APR)uses progesterone therapy and can often save the pregnancy and the precious baby. Studies show success rates around 64%-68% with proper protocols, with many healthy babies born. Organizations across the country stand ready to help women who change their minds after the first dose.

Time is critical — reaching out immediately offers real hope.

A Pro-Life Call to Protect Women

This Florida lawsuit and Judge Duncan’s ruling represent a stand for true informed consent and accountability. Planned Parenthood has built a business model on minimizing risks while maximizing abortions, including chemical ones that now make up a substantial portion (63%-65%) of all abortions. The evidence is clear: these “death drugs” are not safe, especially when dispensed by mail without proper medical oversight.

Women deserve better than euphemisms and false assurances. They deserve full information about the physical, emotional, and spiritual consequences of abortion. Pregnancy resource centers across Florida and the nation offer compassionate, truthful support — including ultrasounds, counseling, and practical help — without the agenda of ending innocent lives.

As this case moves forward, we at Florida Right to Life pray for the women who have been harmed, for the unborn children lost, and for justice that prioritizes human life over ideology and profit. Truth is prevailing in Florida, and it must spread. Every life is precious, and every woman deserves real care — not chemical solutions pushed through deception.

We thank our excellent Attorney General, James Uthmeier, for taking on the deception of this abortion giant.
