Tom Emmer Calls Mamdani and El-Sayed ‘Hair Tonic Salesmen’

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer is warning young Americans not to buy the socialist left’s shiny promises, comparing rising progressive stars Abdul El-Sayed and Zohran Mamdani to salesmen peddling a political scam.

“Unfortunately, you’ve got these hair tonic salesmen like Abdul El-Sayed and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani that are selling them literally the same thing that Pinocchio was sold when he was taken to the island, that you’re going to get everything and of course everybody turns into a donkey,” Emmer told Fox News Digital.

The Minnesota Republican’s warning comes as DSA-linked candidates have toppled establishment Democrats in several primaries. Candidates associated with the socialist organization have defeated four sitting House Democrats in New York, Colorado and Michigan and are favored to reach Congress next year.

El-Sayed, who denies being a democratic socialist and is not a DSA member, defeated an establishment-backed moderate in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary. He has nevertheless aligned with prominent socialist figures and received support from members of that movement.

Mamdani, meanwhile, is a DSA member whose rise to the New York City mayor’s office has made him a national standard-bearer for democratic socialism.

Emmer argued that the movement exploits real financial anxiety among younger Americans by offering government programs that cannot deliver what their advocates promise.

“There are challenges in this country that we cannot ignore, right? People are struggling to make ends meet,” Emmer said. “This generation has more bills than any generation before them, because of their cell phones and the streaming services and all the things that they have that they have to deal with every day.”

The DSA asks visitors to its website to imagine a “future without capitalism” in which “you work as much as you are able and no more than needed.” The language echoes Karl Marx’s description of communism: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.”

Emmer said socialism rejects the connection between effort and achievement that has powered American prosperity.

“Somebody who’s talented and works hard can actually achieve in this country. They object to that, because you know what? Everybody should have the same in their book, regardless of their abilities, regardless of their effort,” he said.

“It’s never worked anywhere else in the world in history. Their way doesn’t work,” Emmer continued. “Unfortunately, we got a lot of young people who have been done a disservice with the education. They may have to learn this firsthand.”

His message was blunt: “There is nothing democratic about socialism.”
