Abortions Double in Virginia, Extreme Amendment Would Kill More Babies

If the extremist abortion amendment is approved by voters in November, we can expect a significant increase in abortions in Virginia each year.

Consider the national data released by the Guttmacher Institute this year which shows a dramatic, and troubling, rise in abortions across the United States, especially in Virginia. These numbers underscore what is at stake as Virginians prepare to vote on the proposed Extremist Abortion Amendment this November.

National Abortion Trends: What the Guttmacher Report Shows

According to the Guttmacher Institute, which is the nation’s leading pro‑abortion data tracker, abortion has surged to the highest level in U.S. history since national reporting began.

Key findings from the report (Guttmacher Monthly Abortion Provision Study) include:

  • 1,129,000 abortions occurred in 2025, the highest number ever recorded in the U.S.
  • A 21% increase from 2020, and a significant rise compared to pre‑Dobbs levels.
  • Abortions increased even in states with restrictions. States with permissive laws saw the largest increases, including Virginia.

These numbers confirm a national trend: abortion has risen sharply since the Dobbs decision, not declined.

Virginia’s Abortion Numbers Are Rising

  • Virginia recorded over 39,500, a substantial increase from pre‑Dobbs years.
  • Virginia has become a regional abortion hub, with thousands traveling from North Carolina, West Virginia, and Tennessee.

Unrestricted Virginia Abortion Amendment

It is important to mention that this rise is occurring before the vote on the proposed abortion constitutional amendment this fall. If the amendment passes in November, Virginia’s numbers will certainly climb higher as a result of the unrestricted abortion provisions in the amendment. Here are a few of the provisions found in the proposed amendment that would make it one of the most extreme abortion regimes in the country.

  • No meaningful limits on abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy
  • No parental notification or consent for minors
  • Mental‑health exceptions that allow abortion up to birth.
  • No ability for lawmakers to enact future safety regulations, clinic standards, or informed‑consent protections.

Beyond the tragic loss of unborn children, the amendment would jeopardize the health and safety of women. In addition, it would also worsen Virginia’s already declining fertility rate (1.5 births per woman), further weakening family stability and long‑term demographic health.

Virginia stands at a crossroads. The data is clear, the stakes are high, and the consequences are lasting. For the sake of women, families, and the unborn, voting NO is the most responsible choice for the Commonwealth.
