The Academy Awards are officially going digital, with the Oscars headed to YouTube in a blockbuster streaming deal that will reshape Hollywood’s biggest night.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday it has signed a multiyear agreement with Google-owned YouTube to stream the Oscars from 2029 through 2033, beginning with the 101st Academy Awards.
The exclusive deal doesn’t just cover the ceremony. It includes red carpet coverage, behind-the-scenes access, and entry inside the ultra-exclusive Governors Ball, turning Oscar night into an all-access digital event.
Under the agreement, the ceremony will be available to YouTube TV subscribers in the U.S., while viewers around the world will be able to watch for free on YouTube — a major shift from decades of traditional television broadcasting.
“The Oscars are one of our essential cultural institutions, honoring excellence in storytelling and artistry,” YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said in a statement. “Partnering with the Academy to bring this celebration of art and entertainment to viewers all over the world will inspire a new generation of creativity and film lovers while staying true to the Oscars’ storied legacy.”
The move won’t happen overnight. The Academy’s current domestic deal with Disney and ABC runs through 2028, including the 100th Oscars. Internationally, Disney’s Buena Vista International will continue distributing the show during that period.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor said the YouTube partnership will “expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible,” calling it a win for both Academy members and the global film community.
