Police rushed to a synagogue in suburban Detroit on Thursday after a vehicle crashed into the building and witnesses reported hearing gunshots shortly afterward.
Authorities responded to Temple Israel just before 1 p.m. following reports that a car had struck the structure, according to local station WDIV-TV.
Law-enforcement sources told the outlet the vehicle appeared to intentionally plow into the synagogue before catching fire.

Aerial footage from the scene showed smoke drifting from the building in the apparent aftermath of the crash.
The synagogue complex includes a preschool, according to the temple’s website.
Police have described the situation as an “active scene” and urged residents to avoid the area as officers continue to respond.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether anyone was injured or provided further details about the circumstances surrounding the crash or the reported gunshots.
