Geopolitical analyst Pepe Escobar made explosive allegations yesterday during an appearance on Mario Nawfal’s podcast. He claimed that Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, allegedly under orders from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, planned to assassinate Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, and possibly other members of the Pakistani delegation during U.S.-Iran peace talks in Switzerland.
According to Escobar, Pakistani military intelligence intercepted what they felt to be credible information about the plot. Pakistan reportedly responded with a stern warning delivered through intermediaries: “If you touch our delegation, we’re going to wipe you off the map, period.” Mossad allegedly backed off, allowing the talks to proceed without incident.
Pakistan and Qatar have positioned themselves as mediators in U.S.-Iran discussions. Talks took place during the past week in Switzerland and involved U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Iranian officials, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Munir. Discussions advanced the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” and a 60-day ceasefire. All parties departed safely, with mediators describing progress.
Pakistan and Israel do not maintain formal diplomatic relations, and tensions exist, particularly over Israel’s policies toward Muslim-majority countries and the issue of Palestinian statehood. However, Escobar’s allegations remain unverified by any official Pakistani, Israeli, U.S., Iranian, or Swiss sources, though one news outlet alleged that a “well-placed Pakistani security official” denied the report. No independent evidence, such as intelligence leaks, diplomatic cables, or mainstream investigative reporting, has corroborated the plot.
There are also logistical and strategic implausibilities. Conducting such an operation in Switzerland during high-profile, heavily secured talks would carry enormous risks of international fallout, especially against a nuclear-armed state. Mossad has a history of targeted operations, but none publicly matching this scenario.
