Doctors, Medical Professionals Oppose Virginia Amendment 1, Reject Abortions Up to Birth

A coalition of doctors, medical professionals, and concerned Virginians this week launched No Safeguards, No Deal, a statewide effort to tell voters the truth about Amendment 1, the abortion measure on the November 3 ballot, and the real consequences it carries for women’s health and safety. The message is direct: Virginians are being offered a false choice. Amendment 1 writes vague, one-size-fits-all rules into the state Constitution and strips away basic safeguards that protect women, girls, and parents. It is not reproductive freedom. It is a permanent power shift that leaves patients exposed and makes it harder, not easier, to keep women safe.

“Virginians are being told they have to trade away women’s safety to protect personal decisions. That’s a false choice, and it’s not true,” said Dr. Fidelma Rigby. “As a doctor, I am very concerned how this amendment is framed around a lie. While promising to advance women’s rights, it actually guts their protections and is written to protect providers instead of women. When you make it harder to set and enforce safeguards, women get hurt. Some could even die. We owe people the truth before they vote, and that’s why I’m willing to lend my name to this important campaign to vote no before we get a permanent constitutional amendment where women get hurt and providers who helped draft the language can’t even be held accountable.”

Virginia already has some of the most permissive abortion laws in the country, the only state in the South without a gestational limit before the third trimester. Amendment 1 would go further, locking sweeping language like “fundamental right” and “least restrictive means” into the Constitution, language that sounds appealing but, in a courtroom, ties the state’s hands when safety concerns arise.

Doctors and medical professionals across Virginia are sounding the alarm. Their warning is straightforward: medicine evolves, risks change, and lawmakers need the ability to update patient protections as we learn more. Amendment 1 takes that ability away. Once this language is in the Constitution, it overrides ordinary law and makes commonsense health and safety standards far harder to enforce, or to strengthen in the future.

The coalition behind No Safeguards, No Deal is bipartisan, made up of Virginians who agree on a simple principle: we do not have to sacrifice women’s safety and parental rights to protect deeply personal decisions. Both things can be true. Both things should be protected.
