Doctors Told Her to Have Abortion, But Her Daughter is Now 5 and Thriving

A mother who was pressured by doctors to have an abortion because of a large uterine fibroid refused the advice and gave birth to a healthy daughter who is now nearly 5 years old and thriving.

Rebecca Lepre discovered a 5-centimeter uterine fibroid in the fall of 2020 and was scheduled to consult a surgeon early the next year. In January 2021, after learning she was pregnant, she visited the surgeon at five weeks to discuss removing the growth.

“I sat with the surgeon while he reviewed my scans and, without looking up at me, he said ‘Let me check my schedule so we can terminate the pregnancy,’” Lepre recounted.

When she firmly stated she would not abort her baby, the doctor replied without eye contact: “Well, when you miscarry, just come back to me and do not get pregnant again.”

Lepre left the office in tears, fearful of losing the child she already loved.

The fibroid expanded to 19 centimeters as the pregnancy progressed. Doctors closely monitored her as a high-risk patient, informing her that a cesarean section would be required and that she risked bleeding out on the operating table if the fibroid was nicked during delivery.

In September 2021, her daughter Lucia was born at 39 weeks, weighing 7 pounds and perfectly healthy.

The fibroid was nicked, and Lepre lost three units of blood, necessitating a transfusion. She recovered fully and left the hospital with her newborn just two days later.

In December 2021, a different surgeon performed a myomectomy to remove the fibroid. During a follow-up visit, with Lucia present in her car seat, the doctor asked if the baby had been born full-term and at a healthy weight. After Lepre confirmed both, the surgeon looked at her and said: “I want you to know your daughter is a miracle, and she should not be here.”

Lepre described leaving that appointment filled with gratitude for the life in her arms and the faith that guided her decision to choose life.

“Today, my daughter Lucia is almost 5 and she is beautiful, smart, kind, and full of life,” she said. “Lucia has a light about her that is felt by anyone who interacts with her. She is very attuned to others’ emotions and always tries to brighten their mood.”

Lepre hopes her experience will encourage other women facing similar medical pressure.

“I hope my story finds its way to at least one mom who is being told that they should have an abortion, and helps them to second guess the doctors and give life a chance,” she wrote. “I know this world will be a better place because of my little Lucia. Every baby given the chance at life has the potential to brighten our world if we let them!”
