Dozens of Americans Missing After Deadly Nepal Flash Flood

Dozens of Americans are missing after a catastrophic wall of water and debris tore through northern Nepal Wednesday, killing nearly 100 people and triggering an international search across the Himalayan border region.

Nepali officials said at least 47 U.S. tourists were among hundreds of foreigners still unaccounted for Wednesday afternoon as rescuers struggled to reach devastated mountain communities.

The number has shifted throughout the day as tour operators and authorities reconcile passenger lists, making the American toll particularly fluid.

The U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu said it is working with Nepali authorities “to account for U.S. citizens who may have been affected.”

At least 95 people were confirmed dead in Nepal, while Chinese state media reported three deaths across the border in Tibet.

The disaster struck around 8:30 a.m. local time when an enormous landslide of mud, ice and rock crashed into the Bhote Koshi River system, unleashing a violent surge through the valleys below.

Security footage showed people sprinting from the torrent as water and debris swallowed roads, bridges, homes and businesses.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially registered the violent shaking as an earthquake.

It later determined the landslide itself generated the seismic signal —powerful enough to register as the equivalent of a magnitude 5.2 event.

More than 400 foreign nationals were reported missing in Nepal as authorities raced to locate tourists traveling through the popular Himalayan region.

Bad weather made the rescue even harder. Three Nepali military helicopters attempting to reach the disaster zone were forced to turn back Wednesday.
