El-Sayed’s Half-Sister Charged After Anti-ICE Protest

Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed is facing new questions over his family’s radical political ties after his half-sister was identified as a far-left professor charged with felonies following an anti-ICE protest.

Eman Abdelhadi, an associate professor at the University of Chicago, was arrested outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in suburban Chicago last October.

Authorities accused Abdelhadi of spitting on an Illinois state trooper during months of demonstrations at the Broadview facility, some of which turned violent.

She was charged Oct. 3 with two counts of aggravated battery against a government employee, a Class 3 felony, and two misdemeanor counts of resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

One day before her arrest, Abdelhadi discussed her involvement in the Broadview protests during an appearance on “Movement Memos,” a podcast affiliated with the left-wing publication Truthout.

“These people are terrorizing our communities and they’re setting up shop,” Abdelhadi said of federal immigration officers.

“I mean, in Broadview, ICE has been setting up shop in our backyard. Just brazenly taking up community resources to terrorize this very same community.”

Abdelhadi said joining the demonstrations was necessary to deliver a message to federal authorities.

“And so it felt really important to join protesters out there to say, not in our city, not in our name, not in our backyard,” she said.

She also rejected any political accommodation with moderate Democrats.

“There’s no center left,” Abdelhadi declared. “You’re either resisting or you’re complicit.”

Abdelhadi publicly celebrated her older half-brother’s Senate campaign when El-Sayed announced his candidacy in April 2025.

“The feeling when you think you’ve accomplished a lot but then your older brother runs for senate!!!” she wrote on X. “In all seriousness—Abdul is fighting for healthcare, housing, and an economy that serves people over oligarchs. I am a proud little sister.”

The siblings share a mother, psychiatric nurse practitioner Fatten Elkomy, but were raised in different households. Abdelhadi grew up in Missouri, while El-Sayed was raised by his father and stepmother in suburban Detroit.
