Her actions spared the child a tragic fate and paved the way for a loving adoptive family.
The tiny baby boy, believed to be just hours old and weighing about 7 pounds, was discovered crying inside the climate-controlled incubator at the Racine Fire Department station shortly after 8 a.m. First responders immediately pulled the child to safety, checked for any signs of distress and rushed him to a nearby hospital for a thorough evaluation.
Doctors pronounced the infant healthy, with no apparent injuries or health concerns, and he is now in state custody, poised to enter Wisconsin’s adoption network where screened families eagerly await.

This groundbreaking event marks the inaugural use of a Safe Haven Baby Box in the Badger State since the program’s inception, offering a confidential lifeline to mothers overwhelmed by crisis pregnancies. Installed at the Racine firehouse in December 2024, the box is one of seven scattered across Wisconsin, each designed as a silent sentinel providing a 24/7, judgment-free haven to prevent the unthinkable—abandonment in alleys, dumpsters or worse.
“This mother’s decision was not abandonment—it was an act of love. She chose life. She chose safety. She chose hope,” said Monica Kelsey, founder and CEO of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, the national nonprofit behind the initiative.
Kelsey’s organization has facilitated over 150 anonymous surrenders nationwide since 2015, saving vulnerable newborns from peril and underscoring the power of compassionate alternatives to abortion and infanticide.
Pro-life advocates hail such surrenders as a beacon of hope in a culture too often steeped in death, emphasizing how these boxes empower women to opt for mercy over malice. The device, a ventilated, heated pod equipped with sensors that alert authorities within seconds of a baby’s placement, ensures anonymity under Wisconsin’s Safe Haven law, which shields surrendering parents from prosecution as long as the child is unharmed.
“This first surrender in Wisconsin is more than a statistic. It’s a legacy in motion. It’s a mother’s silent prayer answered. It’s a community’s promise fulfilled,” the organization stated in a release. “To the mother: You are seen. You are brave. You are loved.”
