Much was made in the news yesterday of the announcement that Marvel Comic is moving its HQ from NYC, where it was born, to California. Virtually everything in that article just linked is pure PR nonsense. Disney bought Marvel a while ago. As many of us feared, the comics have suffered – severely, becoming captive to the movies instead of being their own creative entity. Risky story telling has died, much as the innovative animation that was once Mickey Mouse has given way to cheaply produced corporate garbage. With the advent of digital art, comic book creation has gone virtually totally remote. HQ is just bookkeeping and can be squeezed into empty space, which is plentiful, in the Disney Studios. Why pay NYC rent?
Anyway, this is Disney, the most “California” of companies. This is no indication of California rising. This is an entire company possessed by a mindset that the rest of the nation is no longer buying. They own many intellectual properties that are indeed iconic but which increasingly represent a worldview very different from that of the audience that made them so. This is business consolidation, a sign of financial decline. Disney, and the state that houses it, are either too stupid, or too self-indulgent, to see the signs.
As a life long fan of the comic book medium, it is ever so tempting to fall into a massive diatribe about everything that is wrong with comics right now. The loss of the heroic ideal being chief among those wrongs. But that would be deeply esoteric and likely boring to most of my readers here. I shall resist the temptation. Just don’t buy the PR here. This is a sign of decline.
And With That, The Remainders In The Pile
And since we started in California, we will turn to the usual pile of California nonsense first. Marvel is also leaving because New York is just as bad as California. California and race baffles me. It is the most diverse state in the union and yet acts as if racism is the biggest problem in the state – always wrongly. And while it does so, it neglects to take care of the basics that government is actually supposed to worry about. Or this. But sometimes you are forced to wonder if California is incompetent, trapped in a horrible ideology, or just corrupt.
Do you realize we live in a society where courage and sacrifice are forgotten and compassion has become toxic? And while we are discussing our broken moral compass – this. We have got to get this fixed.
On a lighter note…
I think 2001: A Space Odyssey started this way.
