Ireland Defeats Radical Bill for Abortion on Demand

Ireland’s Dáil has defeated a radical Social Democrats bill that sought to remove the mandatory three-day reflection period for abortions up to 12 weeks and widen the grounds for late-term abortions.

The reflection is important for women to consider pro-life alternatives.

The Reproductive Rights (Amendment) Bill 2026 was rejected on Second Stage by a vote of 85-30.

Pro Life Campaign, which had mobilized supporters to contact TDs and Senators urging a “NO” vote, welcomed the outcome.

“Incredible result in the Dáil tonight with the extreme abortion Bill defeated by 85 to 30 votes! Well done to all of those who contacted their TDs over the last number of days,” the group posted on X.

In advance of the vote, Pro Life Campaign described the proposal as “one of the most extreme abortion proposals to come before the Oireachtas” because it would remove the life-saving three-day reflection period and widen the grounds for late-term abortions.

Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns had pushed the measure, arguing the three-day wait causes “unnecessary distress and delay” in getting the baby killed in the abortion.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin described the legislation as containing “significant flaws.”

Opponents defended the existing safeguard.

Independent Ireland TD Ken O’Flynn called the three-day period “an important safeguard” and asked: “If the position of the Social Democrats is a moral certainty, then the question for it is why is it afraid of three days?”

Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín argued the period allows time to reflect on a “massive decision.”

The defeat maintains Ireland’s current abortion framework, enacted after the 2018 repeal of the Eighth Amendment, which includes the three-day wait for early abortions and limits on abortions for babies who supposedly have physical disabilities. However, prenatal testing shows many of those are false positives.
