It’s Time for Americans to Step Up and End Abortion

Twenty-four years ago, after terrorists attacked our nation and killed thousands of American citizens, I issued a nationwide call to everyone to stop what they are doing and devote as much of their time and energy as possible to ending the holocaust of abortion.

I am issuing that call again, because even with the fall of Roe v. Wade more than three years ago, a million babies are still being killed by legal abortion every year. It’s way past time for us to end this slaughter.

Many are called to work full time in the pro-life movement. If you are among them, please consider leave your current positions and do so without delay. If it’s not immediately clear what work you can find within the vast pro-life movement, at least start the process of finding out.

And for those for whom their duties make it impossible to work full time in this movement, I urge you to take time to seriously consider how to make every available moment of time, ounce of energy, and dollar of resources available to fighting abortion.

Nobody can do everything, but we can all do more.

We cannot fit the battle for the unborn into our lifestyle; we have to fit our lifestyle into the battle for the unborn.

That’s what led me in 1993 to request and receive permission from my bishop to devote my life and ministry exclusively to fighting to end abortion.

This was and remains a matter of conscience for me. That’s why, when members of the Church hierarchy told me at one point to devote LESS time to fighting abortion, I said No. That is what led to my dismissal from the priesthood.

But like so many others, I simply never will back away from a full-time commitment to end abortion. Never.

There are many who share this conviction that they simply cannot go on with life “business as usual” until this horror ends. Let’s continue to echo that call to everyone else to put aside business as usual until abortion ends.

Do whatever you can, whatever your circumstances allow, to devote as much time, attention, and energy to this great cause as possible!

This call is rooted in the spirit of Advent and in the emergency we face regarding the children in the womb.

Advent celebrates the coming of the Lord — the One who has come, who comes daily, and who will come again in glory. Because we cannot welcome the Lord while rejecting Him, Advent also calls us to repentance. We cannot receive Jesus while rejecting the unborn. “Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you do to Me.” This is not complicated theology; it is common sense.

Scripture teaches that the coming of the Lord purges the guilt of innocent blood. Throughout biblical history, bloodshed — including child sacrifice — brought judgment on the land. Today, abortion sheds more innocent blood than any act of violence, and all who dwell in the land share responsibility and must seek God’s forgiveness.

If we long for the Lord’s coming, we must reject abortion fully and without compromise. He is the Lord of Life.

Either we end abortion, or it will end us. And all other issues and problems pale in comparison to this unprecedented holocaust.

Now, in fact, as abortion supporters continue to hide what abortion is, and as some Church leaders try to assert that other issues can counterbalance abortion, it is more urgent than ever that we reveal, by our behavior, the urgent priority that the abortion issue deserves.

In light of this, I renew a call first issued in 2001. The violence of abortion and the violence we see in society share the same root: A disregard for innocent human life. This is a moral emergency.

Many organizations are ready to receive people willing to give their time and talent to end abortion. Hundreds responded to this call in the past; even more can respond now.

As St. John Paul II warned in Evangelium Vitae, when a nation permits abortion, the disintegration of that nation has already begun. St. Mother Teresa said, “If a mother can kill her own child, how can we tell people not to kill each other?” This is the moment to rally and reorder our lives around the fight for life.

It’s time to end abortion once and for all.
