Jacob Frey Mocked Over Awkward Viral Dance Video

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey tried — and failed —  to bust a move over the weekend.

Frey, 45, became an instant social media punchline after video showed the left-wing mayor stiffly swaying through a rap performance at the Black Entrepreneur State Fair.

Wearing an off-white button-down shirt, gray khakis and dark sunglasses, Frey gyrated his arms and hips as a hip-hop beat played behind him. The energetic emcee beside him appeared to be operating at an entirely different speed.

The performance unfolded in what appeared to be a largely empty parking lot, but it still found an audience online.

“This cannot be real life. This is just so sad on an epic scale,” one X user wrote.

“We’re ruled by theater kids. How did we let this happen?” another asked.

One viewer searched for a structural explanation: “Is he made of wood?”

“That dance was stiff as a board. Zero rhythm, all effort. Brutal for real,” another user added.

The weekend performance was hardly Frey’s first battle with the beat.

During a Somali Independence Day celebration in Minneapolis last summer, the mayor took the stage with a Somali flag and attempted another dance. His arm movements drew comparisons to someone awkwardly swimming through the air.

Frey also showcased his moves during his 2025 reelection campaign, bounding onto a stage with a routine that appeared to combine a jog, a flap and an ostrich impression.

Politicians have long used music and dancing to demonstrate their connection with voters. The risk is that every camera in the crowd is waiting to capture the moment when the rhythm refuses to cooperate.

Frey brought the enthusiasm.

He brought the sunglasses.

He brought every ounce of effort he had.

The beat declined to meet him halfway.
