Footage of legendary host Johnny Carson responding to the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan is going viral, drawing sharp comparisons to today’s political and cultural climate.
The clip, viewed hundreds of thousands of times online, shows Carson striking a somber tone as he opened the Academy Awards following the attack.

“I’m sure that all of you here and most of you watching tonight understand why we delayed this program for 24 hours,” Carson said. “Because of the incredible events of yesterday … the show must go on seemed relatively unimportant.”
The Oscars were postponed after John Hinckley Jr. shot Reagan on March 30, 1981, outside the Washington Hilton Hotel — the same venue where a recent shooting targeted President Donald Trump.
Reagan was seriously wounded and spent nearly two weeks recovering in the hospital before returning to the White House.
Carson emphasized the gravity of the moment, explaining why a celebration felt inappropriate amid uncertainty about the president’s condition.
“The Academy, ABC television and all of us connected with the show felt … it would have been inappropriate to stage a celebration,” he said.
Still, he noted Reagan’s resilience — even humor — during recovery.
“You must remember, this is a man who … wrote on a sheet of paper, ‘All things considered, I’d rather be in Philadelphia,’” Carson told the audience, drawing a line between solemnity and optimism.
The resurfaced clip has gained traction as critics point to a stark contrast with some modern reactions.
