According to a Fox News report, Speaker Mike Johnson is cranking up the pressure on Senate Democrats — keeping the House out of session for a sixth straight week as the government shutdown drags on.
The standoff is now the second-longest in U.S. history, and less than a week from breaking another record. The 2018–2019 shutdown lasted nearly 35 days.
Senate Democrats have blocked the GOP’s short-term funding plan 13 times, and while faint hopes of compromise have surfaced, neither side is budging.
Meanwhile, funding for key programs millions of Americans depend on is about to run dry this weekend — with the Senate leaving town until Monday after failing yet again to pass the bill.
SNAP funding is expected to begin drying up Saturday, potentially cutting off 42 million Americans who rely on food stamps.
Money for WIC, the program that helps pregnant women and young children, is also on the brink — even after the Trump administration moved funds earlier this month to buy time.
And Head Start, which supports childcare for low-income families, is also expected to run out this weekend.
Republicans’ continuing resolution (CR) extends current funding for seven weeks and adds $88 million in security funds for lawmakers, the White House, and the courts — a measure with bipartisan backing.
Republican leaders have signaled openness to discussions about reforming and enhancing those healthcare credits but are rejecting Democrats’ demand to include them in the CR.
President Trump unloaded on Democrats on Friday, calling them “crazed lunatics” for voting against a clean CR.
