Missouri state officials have appealed to the Missouri Supreme Court to defend the state’s pro-life abortion laws after a lower court ruling struck down numerous protections.
Multiple state officials and entities filed the appeal Friday with the state’s highest court. The filing challenges a June decision by Jackson County Circuit Judge Jerri Zhang that struck down multiple pro-life laws.
Judge Zhang ruled that several state laws regarding abortion restrictions violated Amendment 3, the “Right to Reproductive Freedom Initiative,” which Missouri voters barely passed in November 2024 after millions in false advertising that misled voters.
The appeal seeks to overturn that ruling and restore the pro-life protections the state had in place.

Missouri became the first state to enact a near-total abortion ban following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Voters later approved Amendment 3, adding pro-abortion language that abortion activists have used to challenge the pro-life laws.
By taking the case to the Missouri Supreme Court, state leaders are fighting to uphold restrictions they argue safeguard unborn life against the lower court’s interpretation of the new constitutional amendment. The outcome will determine whether Missouri can continue enforcing its longstanding pro-life measures.
