New York voters say cost of living is out of control, Siena poll finds

New Yorkers are feeling the squeeze — and they’re not holding back.

A new poll from Siena College found that a clear majority of voters say the state’s cost of living is spiraling out of control. Just 27% of respondents said things are on the right track.

A staggering 67% said they’re headed in the wrong direction.

And this isn’t a partisan gripe — it’s broad-based frustration.

Majorities across the political spectrum agree costs are too high: 59% of Democrats, 79% of Republicans and 71% of independents all said New York is becoming unaffordable.

Housing is a major driver.

Only 31% of voters believe the state is doing enough to create affordable housing, while 57% say efforts are falling short.

Nearly 70% of Republicans, two-thirds of independents and even a plurality of Democrats agree: housing costs are simply too high.

Crime is also weighing heavily on voters’ minds.

A majority — 53% — said efforts to reduce crime are moving in the wrong direction, compared to 38% who say things are improving.

On other issues, the picture is more mixed.

Voters are split on education, environmental protection, transportation, and health care — with Democrats generally more optimistic, and Republicans and independents more skeptical.
