Pro-Life Group Tells Republicans to Use Reconciliation Bill to Defund Planned Parenthood

Students for Life Action (SFLAction) President Kristan Hawkins urged Members of the U.S. House and Senate to defund Planned Parenthood and Big Abortion via the reconciliation plans underway and also asked support for a debarment investigation by the Trump Administration’s agencies in a powerful letter sent to the Hill today.

SFLAction will score GOP members on whether any of the proposed spending bills cut funds to Planned Parenthood by America’s birthday.

“The Pro-Life Generation asks for a commitment to defunding Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry in any reconciliation measure, in base text language, for no less than 10 years, and as a non-negotiable goal,” wrote Hawkins. “At the same time, Congress can also call on the Trump Administration to debar Planned Parenthood, reviewing their horrific track record at the agency level, leading to determining that they are unqualified to participate in federal programs. Already, two U.S. Senators have asked for that action from the Small Business Administration, and many organizations have joined Students for Life in calling for a debarment investigation.

“. . . Congress has every legal and moral right to decide with whom to do business. Though Planned Parenthood sued to stop the initial cuts, they dropped their legal efforts after losses. The state of South Carolina in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic also won by a vote of 6-3, ensuring that states have the right to determine whether Planned Parenthood can be ejected from state programs.

“It has been a cruel and wasteful abuse of power to insist that ending life deserves equal billing with life-saving care. Voters will be watching to see whether the GOP acts on the vibrant, life-affirming agenda that we sent them to Washington D.C. to complete.”

Hawkins’ letter comes in the wake of continued calls by SFLAction to defund Big Abortion and the publishing of Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report, which said that the organization secured more funds and committed more abortions than ever before — $832.0M used to kill at least 434,450 preborn babies.

The Countdown to Defund Planned Parenthood & Big Abortion Through Reconciliation

Dear Members of the U.S. House and Senate,

Students for Life Action(SFLAction), on behalf of more than 1,700 student groups and more than 250,000 trained activists operating in all 50 states, calls on members of Congress to ensure that Planned Parenthood and Big Abortion continue to be cut from all federal healthcare spending, a responsibility that rests on members as a result of the one-year defunding in the 2025 reconciliation bill. The reality that another vote or effort would be necessary at this critical time was flagged by all who advocated for the U.S. House 10-year proposal last spring. As a result, a count-down clock for fully defunding abortion vendors is now ticking, leading to America’s 250th birthday. By any means possible, Congress must act to free taxpayers from the forced funding of Planned Parenthood and Big Abortion by the deadline set when President Trump signed the historic Big, Beautiful Bill.

SFLAction will score whether the GOP acts to sever Planned Parenthood and Big Abortion from federal taxpayers on or before the July 4th deadline. Currently, reconciliation talks note that the funding of Planned Parenthood and Big Abortion are on the table, and that’s where they need to stay.

The Pro-Life Generation asks for a commitment to defunding Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry in any reconciliation measure, in base text language, for no less than 10 years, and as a non-negotiable goal. With that long-overdue step, the GOP ends a political gift to a corrupt and well-connected Democratic Party friend and ally. But most importantly, the GOP would be standing with the preborn and their mothers, as well as with all Americans whose consciences are violated by the ongoing, taxpayer-funded support of abortion and the abortion industry in America.

Should reconciliation take place again, members need to continue stewarding the process to reverse an epic waste of federal funds, as monies that should be invested in life-saving care instead end up in the hands of easily replaceable abortion vendors. We ask that you do that again in the House and the Senate to ensure that this matter is settled for years to come.

As I noted at the Defund Planned Parenthood & Big Abortion event on the Capitol grounds last year during reconciliation talks, along with SBA Pro-Life America, March for Life, Family Research Council, Concerned Women for America, and many others, including members of Congress: “We can Make America Healthy Again by ensuring those healthcare dollars continue to stay with women and families who need them and can get to one of the already 1,500 federally-qualified, high quality health care centers who operate 19,000 service sites, who aren’t lobby agencies, who provide fully comprehensive healthcare services and understand when a pregnant woman walks in their doors, they have two patients to treat.”

Abortion is federal because we pay for it and support those who sell it with federal tax dollars. A prejudice in favor of abortion lurks in mandates and pollutes policy throughout Health & Human Services (HHS), the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to name only a few.

At the same time, Congress can also call on the Trump Administration to debar Planned Parenthood, reviewing their horrific track record at the agency level, leading to determining that they are unqualified to participate in federal programs. Already, two U.S. Senators have asked for that action from the Small Business Administration, and many organizations have joined Students for Life in calling for a debarment investigation.

Congress has every legal and moral right to decide with whom to do business. Though Planned Parenthood sued to stop the initial cuts, they dropped their legal efforts after losses. The state of South Carolina in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic also won by a vote of 6-3 the right to determine whether Planned Parenthood could be ejected from a state program.

It has been a cruel and wasteful abuse of power to insist that ending life deserves equal billing with life-saving care. Voters will be watching to see whether the GOP acts on the vibrant, life-affirming agenda that we sent them to Washington D.C. to complete.

Kristan Hawkins
