South Carolina Abortions Drop 16% as Heartbeat Law Saves More Babies

The number of abortions reported in South Carolina decreased by more than 16 percent in 2025, according to the newly released South Carolina Department of Public Health abortion report.

The report documents 2,534 abortions in 2025, compared with 3,025 abortions in 2024. That represents a decline of 491 abortions, or 16.2 percent, in one year.

The report shows that nearly all abortions occurred during the earliest stages of pregnancy. Of the 2,534 abortions reported in 2025:

  • 2,483 abortions, or 98 percent, occurred at six weeks of pregnancy or earlier.
  • 25 abortions occurred between seven and 13 weeks.
  • 16 abortions occurred between 14 and 19 weeks.
  • 10 abortions occurred between 20 and 23 weeks.

Abortion drugs remained the most commonly used abortion method. The report lists 2,073 medication abortions, accounting for approximately 81.8 percent of all abortions reported in South Carolina during 2025.

Medication abortions declined by approximately 18.8 percent, from 2,552 in 2024 to 2,073 in 2025.

Three abortion facilities accounted for almost all abortions reported in the state:

  • Greenville Women’s Clinic reported 1,162 abortions.
  • Planned Parenthood in Columbia reported 709 abortions.
  • Planned Parenthood in Charleston reported 608 abortions.

Together, the Columbia and Charleston Planned Parenthood facilities reported 1,317 abortions, approximately 52 percent of South Carolina’s statewide total.

The report also shows a substantial decline in abortions involving women from outside South Carolina. Abortions involving out-of-state residents declined from 257 in 2024 to 146 in 2025, a decrease of approximately 43.2 percent.

Among South Carolina residents, reported abortions declined from 2,768 in 2024 to 2,388 in 2025, a decrease of approximately 13.7 percent.

Women between the ages of 20 and 34 accounted for nearly three-fourths of the abortions reported during the year. The largest age groups were:

  • Ages 25–29: 664 abortions
  • Ages 20–24: 644 abortions
  • Ages 30–34: 558 abortions

The report recorded six abortions involving girls younger than 15 and 18 involving girls ages 15 and 16.

A fetal heartbeat was reported as detected in 42 cases, compared with 39 cases in 2024.
