James Talarico’s political makeover is just that — political — according to a minister at his longtime Austin church.
Rev. Babs Miller of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church was caught on undercover video telling a reporter she believes the Democratic Senate nominee’s recent moderation on transgender issues is driven by campaign strategy, not a genuine change of heart.
“I can guarantee you that once he gets elected, he’ll change his tune back to where he was,” Miller said in footage obtained by The Daily Wire.

When the undercover reporter suggested Talarico had to “play this game,” Miller agreed.
“That’s what his campaign has convinced him of,” she said.
“The Democratic Party is backing off on their stances on trans and all of this, and so his staff is encouraging him to kind of do the same thing, just for the next 50 weeks, whatever days.”
St. Andrew’s lists Miller as a minister to the parish, and her church biography says she was ordained there in 2014 as an openly lesbian chaplain.
Her comments matter because Talarico has recently shifted publicly on several transgender-policy questions as he runs against Republican Ken Paxton for U.S. Senate.
Earlier this month, Talarico said he would support a national ban on gender-transition surgeries for minors.
He also said transgender athletes should not compete in girls’ sports when doing so “endangers safety or fairness.”
That represented a change from positions he took in the Texas House, where he opposed Republican restrictions on transgender student-athletes and voted against legislation restricting gender-transition treatments for minors.
Talarico has acknowledged the shift himself.
“I’ve missed the mark on some of my past statements,” he told reporters last week.
The campaign has also tried to put distance between Talarico and one of his most viral past comments: his declaration that “God is non-binary.”
Miller didn’t exactly help with that.
When told Republicans were attacking Talarico over the remark, she responded: “Duh.”
