Teacher Fired After She Tells Students She Opposes Abortion

A Catholic history teacher was summarily dismissed from her position after honestly answering students’ questions about her opposition to abortion during a lesson on the rise of Adolf Hitler.

Sarah Morse, 66, an American-born teacher at Arbroath High School in Angus, Scotland, was fired on November 19, 2025, after pupils asked about life in the United States, including her views on abortion.

Morse, a faithful Catholic, responded according to her religious beliefs.

“I am a faithful Roman Catholic and I am against it,” she told the class.

When questioned about abortion in cases of rape, she explained her belief that the preborn child should not be punished, while noting that many people disagree and that it is reasonable to hold opposing views. She emphasized that she did not attempt to persuade the students and told them it was fine to disagree with her.

By the end of the day, Morse was called into a meeting with senior staff and ordered to leave the school immediately.

She was fired for discussing religion and abortion in the classroom, in violation of guidelines requiring non-partisan teaching with balance and impartiality. Morse stated that she was not offered any right of reply, asked for her account of what happened, or given the opportunity to explain how her legally protected beliefs were raised in the context of the history class.

The head teacher would not even see her.

“To be ‘cancelled’ and lose my livelihood because of my religious identity is a terrifying precedent for the teaching profession in Scotland,” Morse said. “I will not teach anywhere in this country ever again. It’s been an absolute nightmare. I have never felt discriminated against in Canada, in England. It was not a problem. But here I got burnt.”

Morse is taking Angus Council to an employment tribunal on August 24, 2026, claiming discrimination.

She is supported in her legal action by the pro-life group Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC).

Michael Robinson, SPUC’s executive director, described the dismissal as a grave matter.

“The dismissal of a teacher for respectfully answering a student’s question truthfully according to her conscience is a grave matter,” he said. “Government guidelines on political impartiality in the classroom do not prohibit the mention of a teacher’s legally protected beliefs, provided there is no attempt to persuade.”

Robinson added that the school did not follow due process.

“The school did not follow any due process. There was no attempt to ascertain from Sarah what had happened, and the headteacher was not present and would not even see her. This latest incident of trying to silence someone with traditional or religious views is utterly disgraceful and should worry us all.”
