Trump Announces Arrests After Alleged Vandalism Causes Massive Gash In Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

President Trump announced this week that federal authorities have made multiple arrests in connection with alleged vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, claiming vandals used a sharp knife or razor to slash a 350-foot gash in the pool’s newly installed blue liner during the dark of night.

Trump described the damage as deliberate and criminal, stating that workers had to labor hard to create the extensive slashes and jagged, uneven edges where sections of the surface were cut and lifted.

He said repairs would begin immediately and that the pool might need to be drained before or after the Fourth of July for permanent fixes.

Six people have been arrested, and seven people have been cited, for the damage they did to our Country’s now beautiful Reflecting Pool. The 350 foot gash, made by a very sharp knife or razors, is actually numerous slashes over a very long 350 foot length. It was purposefully and criminally done, and somebody had to work very hard, probably in the dark of night, to create such a condition. Likewise, the small area at the bottom of the Pool was cut and powerfully lifted off the surface leaving very jagged, uneven edges. The large areas of grass are being replaced. In any event, even prior to fixing those areas, the Reflecting Pool is as beautiful as it can be. We will drain some of the water, either immediately before or after the Fourth of July, to do the permanent repair.

One of those arrested was identified as 67-year-old former Olympian David Hearn of Bethesda, Maryland, who was detained after touching a piece of peeling liner while on a bicycle ride near the site. Hearn has denied any wrongdoing, saying the material was already detached.

The pool recently reopened following a multimillion-dollar renovation ordered by the Trump administration ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
