Trump Confirms Kim Jong Un Meeting, Says North Korea Has 57 Nukes

President Donald Trump confirmed Wednesday that he intends to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year, reviving his signature brand of personal diplomacy with Pyongyang — while publicly putting an unusually specific number on Kim’s nuclear arsenal.

“I get along with him, and you know what? The fact that I get along with him — that’s a good thing, not a bad thing,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

Then came the number.

Trump said Kim possesses “57 very powerful nuclear weapons,” a figure broadly in line with outside estimates but far more precise than Washington typically states publicly.

“Should have never allowed it to happen,” Trump said. “They should have never allowed it. If I were president, I wouldn’t have allowed it. But he’s got them.”

Trump did not announce a date or location for the meeting.

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Trump has pushed aides to arrange a sitdown as early as this fall, potentially during his expected November trip to Asia for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in China.

A new meeting would be Trump and Kim’s fourth face-to-face encounter.

The two held formal summits in Singapore in 2018 and Hanoi in 2019, followed by a meeting at the Korean Demilitarized Zone later that year, where Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to step into North Korea.
