Dolly Parton spent seven decades becoming an American institution.
President Donald Trump is giving her a national sendoff to match.
Trump ordered U.S. flags flown at half-staff across the country through Sept. 1 in honor of the country music legend, who died Tuesday at 80.

The order covers the White House, federal buildings, military posts, naval stations and U.S. facilities overseas.
“Very sad to report that Dolly Parton, one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER, has just passed away,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“This is a true loss for millions of people. There has never been anyone like her, and never will.”
Then came the tribute.
“Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you.”

The White House formalized the gesture Tuesday with a presidential proclamation ordering flags lowered nationwide and at American embassies and military installations abroad.

Parton died peacefully in Nashville, according to her representatives.
Her family remembered her as much for the person she was as the songs she left behind.
“A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see,” their statement said, praising her “wit, warmth, and kindness.”
Parton’s career stretched from “Jolene” and “Coat of Many Colors” to “9 to 5,” “I Will Always Love You,” Dollywood and the Imagination Library.
She belonged to country music.
But by the end, she belonged to America.
For the next week, the flag will reflect it.
