Trump Won’t Rule Out ISIS-Style Campaign Against IRGC

President Trump left the door open Wednesday to a dramatically expanded campaign against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, suggesting the United States could target the powerful military organization much as it dismantled ISIS.

Asked by Fox Business whether he would consider taking out the IRGC in the same fashion, Trump stopped short of announcing a new operation.

“Yeah, it does. We’ll see what’s happening,” the president said during an interview in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

The brief answer carried enormous implications.

The IRGC is not a rogue militia operating outside Iran’s government. It is an official branch of the Iranian military with its own ground, aerospace and naval forces, along with the elite Quds Force responsible for operations beyond Iran’s borders.

It also holds significant political and economic power inside the country.

The United States designated the IRGC, including the Quds Force, as a foreign terrorist organization in 2019. It marked the first time Washington placed part of another country’s government on that list, according to the State Department.

The warning came as the US military intensified its strikes against Iranian targets. American forces launched a second wave of attacks Wednesday after hitting dozens of sites overnight, marking an unusual shift into daylight operations, according to The Associated Press.

The strikes were aimed at military capabilities that US officials say Iran has used to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington also reimposed its blockade of Iranian ports as the fight for control of the vital energy corridor escalated.

The president said Iranian officials contacted the United States earlier Wednesday to seek another round of peace talks. Iran did not immediately confirm that outreach in the material available.

“They always want to meet,” Trump said.

“They’re nasty people, but they want to make a deal. I can tell you they want to make a deal.”
