New Mexico Alliance for Life has learned that the University of New Mexico (UNM) is in talks to purchase Alta Vista Hospital in Las Vegas, NM, with funds earmarked to include abortion services, setting up a foothold in Northern New Mexico to perform elective abortions.
Earlier this month, New Mexico Alliance for Life confirmed that the UNM Medical Group and state officials identified Las Vegas, New Mexico as the “ideal location” for their second taxpayer-funded abortion killing center.

“If the UNM Board of Regents proceeds with authorizing the purchase of Alta Vista Hospital using the $10 million reproductive healthcare appropriation, per the statute, they would have to include ‘reproductive health’ services, which means abortion procedures,” said Elisa Martinez, NMAFL Executive Director. “The UNM abortion lobby is obsessed with spreading their abortion empire of death to every corner of the state—whether the people of New Mexico like it or not.”
Martinez spoke with State Rep. Anita Gonzales, (D–District 70), whose district includes San Miguel and Torrance Counties, who confirmed that UNM has been negotiating with Alta Vista Hospital on a purchase that could use the $10 million appropriation for a reproductive health center in Northern New Mexico and the $15 million appropriation for rural health care in San Miguel County. Both appropriations were passed in the 2026 legislative session in New Mexico.
“Las Vegas area residents have a great need for access to legitimate health care services including OBGYN, prenatal care, and whole women’s care that does not include killing innocent human beings,” said Vicki Snider, Executive Director of Las Vegas Care Net. “I personally know of two medical professionals who were approached by UNM; one was asked to perform abortions—both flatly refuse to work in a facility that would kill innocent babies. Both said they would love to work in Las Vegas but not if the hospital will be bought to include performing abortions.”
The “abortion is healthcare” mantra is becoming reality as activists and UNM officials use taxpayer dollars to launch “full-spectrum reproductive health” centers that integrate the killing of unborn children into legitimate care—rather than free-standing abortion clinics. Construction is already underway on the state’s first taxpayer-funded UNM-run abortion center in Las Cruces, NM.
In 2024, New Mexico Alliance for Life exposed this strategy through the “UNM CAREs” project The study analyzed three rural New Mexico counties, identified supposed “barriers” to abortion, and shaped the “Reproductive Healthcare Success Project”—a blueprint its authors hailed as the “gold standard” for forcing abortion into resistant rural communities and making it far harder to challenge.
