Vice President JD Vance’s fraud task force is wiping more than 760,000 people from Obamacare coverage after federal officials flagged hundreds of thousands of enrollments as unauthorized or potentially fraudulent.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says the move should recover roughly $2.2 billion in taxpayer-funded subsidies.
CMS says it canceled about 315,000 enrollments covering more than 760,000 people. Vance described the group as a mix of “phantom people” and real people who did not meet eligibility requirements — including some allegedly enrolled by brokers without their knowledge.

Another 419,000 to 450,000 people face additional checks to verify immigration status and income eligibility.
“We’re going to make sure that they are, first of all, legal residents of the United States of America, and second of all, we’re going to make sure that they actually meet the income threshold requirements,” Vance said.
The administration says broker abuse helped fuel the problem.
Vance pointed to one alleged scheme involving 40 brokerage agents and roughly 50,000 enrollments, saying many of the people involved were ineligible and some may not have existed at all.

CMS is also moving against brokers. The agency issued termination notices to more than 200 agents and brokers this year and another 569 notices of intent to terminate to brokers accused of submitting applications missing key identifying information, including Social Security numbers.
Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said the agency found unusually large numbers of enrollees without Social Security numbers and questioned whether some accounts represented real or properly enrolled customers. CMS says unauthorized Marketplace enrollments could otherwise produce as much as $6.6 billion in improper federal spending in 2026.
